Julio's Restaurant
4230 Duval Street
Austin, TX 78751
512-452-1040

Description: Julio's has been serving its amazing Mexican roasted chicken for many years, so you know it's good. Really good. You can get it whole, by the quarter or piled on chalupas, in tacos and quesadillas. Julio's also serves fajitas and enchiladas, but the roast chicken is really the star at this place. They also serve breakfast, which is tasty and plentiful but a bit pricey compared to other Mexican breakfasts. The recent patio addition really adds to this fun little Hyde Park corner.

Roy's Restaurant Austin
340 E 2nd St
Austin, TX 78701
512-391-1500

Description: Hawaii's hottest concept-dining export was born on America's own little island chain but draws on the culinary styles of the entire Pacific region. Roy's re-creates a palatial island atmosphere suitable for such subtropical snacking smack dab in the middle of downtown Austin -- enjoy your entree in the air-conditioned, white-table clothed splendor of the dining room or rough it out on the patio.

Basil's Restaurant
900 W 10th St
Austin, TX 78703
512-477-5576

Description: Basil's serves excellent country-Italian dishes, but the prices aren't for the faint-of-heart and neither are the calories. The restaurant, situated in a charming old house in the downtown area, is quiet, elegant and fairly small; the restaurant offers only 15 tables, divided into four sections, with finely polished wooden floors, candlelight and an atmosphere only made possible by the number of first dates that take place here. The menu is dominated by pastas that are made from scratch, but also reveals an array of meatier selections like beef tenderloin with port and gorgonzola, chicken saltimbocca and veal Marsala.

Jeffrey's Restaurant
1204 W Lynn St
Austin, TX 78703
512-477-5584

Description: Jeffrey's legendary chef, David Garrido, cooks for the President. Of the United States. What more do you need to know? Okay, here's the rest... Jeffrey's deserves its reputation as a celebrity hot spot. On any given night you could see movie stars, international men of intrigue and even a few politicians. The ambience is quiet and cozy, the service efficient and unobtrusive. The food is Southwestern with a Latin American twist.

Wink Restaurant
1014 N Lamar Blvd # E
Austin, TX 78703
512-482-8868

Description: Wink is unusual in that the menu is ever-changing; the day's offerings are completely determined by the availability of fresh ingredients at local markets. The happy result is one of Austin's most worthwhile evenings out. Servers are all necessarily well-versed in the culinary chaos that goes on in the kitchen; your waiter may recommend kobe beef or rack of lamb dressed up in roasted tomatoes and glazed carrots, or perhaps the seared rare tuna with mushrooms and leeks, all doused in orange sauce.

Houston's Restaurant
2408 W. Anderson Lane
Austin, TX 78757
512-451-7333

Description: Two factors contribute to Houston's success as a favorite for hardcore American fare. The first is an exuberant after-work atmosphere made possible by customers who truly enjoy food and drink as well as the kind of dimly lit, hardwood interior that's beloved by Texans of both the well-heeled and steel-toed varieties. The second factor is obvious: Houston's serves only the sort of dishes that working folks can't turn down.

Tien Hong Chinese Restaurant and Bar
8301 Burnet Road
Austin, TX 78757
512-458-2263

Description: Tien Hong's Burnet location, serving North Austin since the mid-eighties, is unusually spacious and brightly decorated -- black and orange put patrons in mind of Halloween -- but there's nothing scary about the food. Vegetarians go for the special mu shu, while the carnivores in the crowd lean toward the black peppered beef and red snapper filet. Particularly noteworthy are the exotic chicken feet and dumplings. Tien Hong is flexible at meeting unusual requests, offering in-house, delivery and catering services as well.

Dan McKlusky's Restaurant
301 E. 6th Street
Austin, TX 78701
512-473-8924

Description: Quieter and with an orientation geared more toward the food than any atmospheric concerns, McKlusky's has won itself a loyal customer base with its all-you-could-ask-for menu and budget- friendly dining specials. Steak is a key entree, but a diverse range of options may also leave you deciding among the chicken-fried steak, the beef fajita salad, the baby back ribs and the lamb.

Banzai Japanese Restaurant
2120 Guadalupe Street
Austin, TX 78705
512-320-0657

Description: Shoppers on the Drag have a nice selection of restaurants from which to choose, but for first-rate Japanese food, they've only got one choice. Well, maybe two or three. But Banzai is a colorful, casual establishment with an emphasis on convenience. Meals are prepared and served at fast-food speed. Choose from a limited-but-praiseworthy selection of sushi, teriyakis, tempuras, katsus, beef, chicken, noodles and other standard Japanese fare.

Vespaio Restaurant
1610 S. Congress Avenue
Austin, TX 78704
512-441-6100

Description: Although this is about as New York-cool as it gets in Austin, Vespaio is much more than just a hipster haven. Fashion-forward foodies flock to SoCo (South Congress) for gourmet neo-Italian hits, including smoked duck and papparadelle fungi, which is folded over wide flat noodles and covered with a brandy cream sauce, shiitakes, portobello mushrooms, shallots and fresh tarragon. An impressive selection of fine wines and attentive service from a professional staff add to the allure.
