Austin Public Schools Austin Apartments

At Austin Apartments, we understand the importance of education in today's society. Parents want nothing more than to place their children in schools where they know their children will be in good hands. Especially when moving to a new area, parents want to make sure that there are appropriate schools nearby. Researching specific needs and wants for their children's education is the first step that any moving parent should take. A simple phone call to the school's district will answer most of your questions, but not all. Some cases may require a visit to a counselor who is more than willing to help a parent find the right education and school for their kids. The internet is also a very useful source for information regarding ANYTHING related to your child's education. Here is a link to the Austin Independent School District website.

Parent/Family Involvement
The mission of the Austin Independent School District (AISD) is that "all students will progress academically and intellectually and will graduate prepared for personal success and inspired to contribute to society." Parents and family members must be involved in this process to promote a healthy system of public education and assist in educating all children to meet high academic expectations and standards.
AISD defines parent and family involvement as the engagement of parents, families, and the community as partners with schools for the purpose of promoting success throughout a child's educational experience. (See AISD Policy GK Local)
Research has proven that family/school/community partnerships are important. Effectively engaging parents in the education of their children can be a very rewarding aspect of educational reform. When schools, communities and families work together:
  • Parents and the community are better able to understand and support what the school is doing.
  • The school is better able to understand the needs and concerns of parents and the community.
  • Children's self-esteem improves.
  • Children's grades and test scores improve.
  • School programs are adjusted to meet the needs of children and adults more fully.
  • Parent-child relationships improve.
  • Communities are strengthened through these newly developed partnerships.
  • The Austin Independent School District promotes a wide range of family involvement activities, including:

  • Communicating: Families and school staff members talking about student needs and learning at school.
  • Parenting: Creating a home environment that prepares children for learning at school.
  • Student Learning: Families and school staff members working together to create environments that support children's learning at home and at school.
  • Volunteering: Creating opportunities for family and community members to volunteer at school, at home, or in the community.
  • School Decision Making: Providing opportunities for family involvement and leadership in educational decision-making.
  • Collaborating: Building partnerships among families and school staff members and community members that provide resources to strengthen families and school programs.

AISD Counseling & Guidance Mission
To implement a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program promoting student success through a focus on academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, advocacy and social/emotional and career development.

Developmental Approach
Integral to the Comprehensive School Counseling Model is the developmental approach. It is an attempt to identify certain life skills and experiences that students need to have as a part of their going to school and preparing for adulthood.
In the developmental approach, students have an opportunity to learn more about themselves and others in advance of problem moments in their lives. They learn interpersonal skills before they have an interpersonal crisis. If a crisis situation does happen, they can draw upon their skills to address their problem. The developmental perspective recognizes that every student needs sound emotional and social skills to achieve optimum benefit from the educational program. There is a commitment to individual uniqueness and the maximum development in three major areas:

  • academic
  • career and
  • personal/social.

Comprehensive Developmental Counseling Model
The comprehensive school counseling program is based on the developmental approach and is systematic in nature, sequential, clearly defined and accountable. The program is proactive and preventive in its focus. It assists students in acquiring and using life-long learning skills. More specifically, school counseling programs include strategies to enhance academics, provide career awareness, develop employment readiness, encourage self-awareness, foster interpersonal communication skills, and impart life success skills for all students.
A Comprehensive Counseling Program is:

  • based upon student competencies
  • built upon a developmental curriculum
  • uses crisis and preventive counseling
  • has four components
  • is evaluated and improved based on evaluation results

The School Counseling Program has characteristics similar to other educational programs, including a scope and sequence, student competencies, activities and processes to assist students in achieving these competencies, professionally credentialed personnel, materials and resources, and accountability methods. Comprehensive school counseling programs are an integral part of each school's total educational program and are developed by design, focusing on needs, interests, and issues related to the various stages of student growth. There are objectives, activities, and expected outcomes, with an emphasis on helping students to learn more effectively and efficiently.

AISD Initiative
Counselors in the Austin Independent School District are in the process of implementing the Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Model in all of our schools. This shift in conception from a constellation of services and activities to a standards-based program represents a significant shift in thinking about the way students are supported and in the anticipated outcomes. The model is based upon four components:

  • Guidance Curriculum
  • Individual Planning
  • Responsive Services
  • System Support

The Guidance Curriculum articulates competencies to be achieved by all students in grades pre-K through 12th grade (SCANS, 1991). The Individual Planning component encompasses the educational and career planning activities that occur for students in grades 5-12 as they complete their Individual Academic Career Plan, as well as career awareness activities at the earlier grades. The Responsive Services component provides special help to students who are facing problems that interfere with their healthy personal, social, career, or educational development through individual and group counseling. System Support includes the management activities necessary to support the other three components, and activities implemented by guidance staff that support the total or other educational programs.
